pre-lab

The images shown are the pages for the prelab template. You will have this document available to you through Blackboard. The pre-lab will be turned in at the beginning of the lab. Each pre-lab uses the same template and needs to be completed before performing the experiment. Check to see if your TA will accept typed pre-labs.

Regardless, it is often your benefit to have a copy for quick reference while performing the experiment and studying for quizzes. Note the following sections on the pre-lab:

  • Name - self explanatory

  • Exp # - the experiment number this pre-lab is for

  • Title - the experiment title this pre-lab is for

  • Brief Descirption of Tasks - 3-4 sentences summarizing the experiement. You may include the main objective of the experiment, concepts demonstrated, and a breakdown of major steps to complete main objective.

  • Outline - Experiment procedure steps in your own words. Make it detailed enough that you more or less able to perform the experiement with just these steps, but not so detailed as rewriting the lab manual.

  • Sample calculations (if neceessary) - some experiments will require calculations. The equations and calculations of hypothetical values should be shown here.

Table of Reagents - reagents' chemical name or formula, physical state and amount that will be used in the experiemnt. These are found in the in the manual for each experiement. You can then google all other information missing. Note:

  • a reagent may be used multiple times. You can list it once and sum the amount.

  • a reagent is used multiple times but in different physical state. You can use the same row, but clearly state the amount used for each physical state.
